Four Veterans of the Chicago
folk scene have joined forces to reproduce as closely as possible the
original songs and sound of The Weavers.
Barbara Barrow sings RONNIE GILBERT’S parts. Mark
Dvorak takes PETE SEEGER’S role, Michael
Smith as LEE HAYS, and Chris Walz sings FRED HELLERMAN.
At the half-century mark
since The Weavers burst upon the music scene, to become America's best-loved
folk group, there is a celebration of their songs and sound:
The Weavers
were America's first successful and ultimately most influential
folksinging group. Their first record, Tzena Tzena/Goodnight
Irene, sold two million copies in 1950. Time Magazine
called them "the most widely imitated group in the business"
and their musical influence can still be heard in The Kingston Trio,
Peter, Paul & Mary and in every coffee house, folk club and
concert hall in the country.
Their songs
form the backbone of the American folk repertoire. Famous songs
written or researched and first recorded by The Weavers include
Wimoweh
Rock
Island Line
Kisses
Sweeter Than Wine
If I
Had A Hammer and
Michael
Row the Boat Ashore
The Weavers remain America's
premier folk group, their recordings are classic and their live performances
legendary.
Carl Sandburg
said,
"When
I hear America singing, The Weavers are there."
