Mike Offutt was a chemistry teacher at Barrington High School for many years, though he has now moved on to a second career presenting his fun and educational Ultimate Science Show to younger students, age 4-12 years.. He uses innovative and creative methods and materials in and out of the classroom to help students become actively involved in learning. Over the past fifteen years, Mike has presented exciting science demonstrations for more than 50,000 kids, adults, teachers, and other professionals in a variety of venues.
A graduate of Illinois State University in 1970 with a B.S.
in Chemistry, Mike also received an M.S. in Secondary Education
from Northern Illinois
University in 1976. He has taught chemistry and physical science
at Barrington High School for 29 years. Mike has presented methods
and materials
workshops for the Illinois Science Teachers Association,
Illinois Chemistry Teachers Association,
the Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago),
Fermi National Accelerator Lab Education Center
(Batavia, Il), SCITECH in Aurora,
the Rockford Discovery Center Museum, and
at libraries, universities, and schools locally and across the
nation.
The Association of Science-Technology Centers listed Mike on their National Honor Roll of Teachers in 1992.
He received the Presidential Award in Excellence in Science and Math Teaching (National Science Foundation) in 1993.
He is a recipient of the Davidson Award for Excellence in Chemistry Teaching and the Tandy Award for Excellence in Teaching. A professional storyteller and songwriter, he has written and recorded five tapes of entertaining and educational songs: Chemistry SongBag, Chemistry Songbag II, Physics Songbag, and Science Songbag. In early 2000, Mike completed a project of songs for the Mole Day Foundation.
