Dennis
Stroughmatt
Dennis Stroughmatt's journey into the roots
of Cajun and French Creole music, stories and language began in
the small isolated communities around Sainte Genevieve, Missouri.
There he learned from diverse master fiddlers such as Roy Boyer and
Charlie Pashia, a blend of old-style French roots music, with infusions
of Celtic bowing and Metis rhythms. Later, Dennis traveled to Quebec
and to southwestern Louisiana, where he learned African Style Creole
fiddling from folks such as Canray Fontento and Black Allemand,
and Creole accordion from Morris Ardoin. Today, Dennis is a keeper
of traditions in the old styles of both upper and lower Louisiana,
a Creole fiddler, accordionist, speaker, historian, and foremost,
musician.
Touring As—
- Solo Speaker/Musician
See notes below in "What's New," Dennis is a fascinating, passionate
and articulate speaker on behalf of the French settlers of middle America.
A rich heritage history that most of us don't realize exists in the midwest,
this is the perfect program for historical groups, libraries a and other community
organizations! (see links below in What's New).
- A Five-Piece Band, Creole Stomp
(Drums, guitar, rub boards/percussion, accordion, fiddle and more). playing
Louisiana Zydeco and Upper Louisiana Creole music. Definitely a hit with
dancing and festival crowds, also concert halls.

Stomp's site.

- Dennis Stroughmatt et l'Esprit Creole
a two-to-four piece band (acoustic fiddle-centered), emphasis on French Creole
music from Upper Louisiana, hints of Cajun spice. Good ensemble for dancing
or concerts... the perfect choice for smaller venues, or for venues of any
size with a special interest in traditional music and folkways of the central
USA.

“I loved
this program because this Scotch-Chotaw lad from Illinois had, by nature
of his very nature, become a Missouri Frenchman ... the living continuation
of a vanishing culture ion the hills near Potosi ... Precious cargo,
this store of experience and memory in the soul of Dennis.
